30 Day Minimalism Challenge

Prior to all of my recent research, I really thought minimalists were the people who bought tiny homes.  They were the ones who had the white walls without a single picture hanging.  You know, all of the straight lines. No character!  Right? I was so wrong.

I initially created this challenge in 2018. Despite being ridiculously busy then, I able to complete half of it. I’ve made some serious lifestyle changes since then. I stopped my small businesses as a photographer and crafter. Also, I’m no longer working at the hospital. I was really tired of the 12-14 hour shifts. My kids were sleep when I left and sleep when I got home most days. Not to mention the physical toll this job took on my body. I stayed at a job I didn’t like for so long simply because we “needed” the money. But did we? So now I’m at a job with less pay, but much better hours. My work-life balance is amazing. I spend so much more time with my children and when I’m ready to pick up my side hustles again, I’ll have the time to do so.

Over the past couple of years I have learned a ton about living a minimal, more present lifestyle.  Pinterest, of course, has been a very helpful source of knowledge.  It has linked me to some great podcasts, YouTube channels and other bloggers that discuss all of the benefits of minimalism. Right now I’m really enjoying the gals at Edit Your Life. Their podcast has been super helpful on this journey to minimalism.

We have accumulated so much stuff. It’s been therapeutic to watch it dwindle as a I slowly get rid of things. Less clutter means I get to spend less time managing the clutter. I’ve found that I’m much happier when there is less to maintain. What mom wouldn’t be?

And lastly, we want our children to remember experiences and create memories.  Physical items fade, but memories last a lifetime.  By buying less stuff and removing excess from our home, we free up time, money and energy to participate in activities.  To take trips.  To enjoy one another.  So join me as we hop on this journey to minimalism.  We are kicking it off with a 30 Day Minimalism Challenge.  Follow me on Instagram for updates and to help hold one another accountable.   1. I’m here. I want less stuff and more experiences! I’m in the middle of a big purge right now. I’m going to follow this guide. Although, it will take my a lot longer than 30 days! Lol

    1. Definitely! I have a deeper cleaning one I want to start in October. Good for you for purging!

  3. I need this challenge in my life! Especially with running a blog full-time and being a full time mom I am burnt out!

    I see that kids clothes is on the list….seesh my son grows and grows and I do my best to keep up with sorting what he can and cannot fit.

    My biggest issue with downsizing his clothes is that hes 4months he has accidents and getS messy you know how it goes so its like a change of clothes is always needed! I would love to hear your expertise in a future blog post on managing a minimalist life style with small children!

    1. Definitely not expertise but still learning as we go. Kids clothes was so hard for me to do because they are sentimental to me. When I started this challenge my daughters had a 4 drawer dresser full, their closet was full and some of their clothes were in the guest closet. Now the dresser actually has an empty drawer and all their clothes are in their closet with alot of extra space. You’d be surprised the stuff you don’t need.

      You can start small. Start with stuff he can’t fit anymore. Then start with stuff that is stained beyond him wearing in public. You can keep a few of those clothes for play time. And feel free to just let him be dirty lol. If my girls are playing and get messy, I just leave them that way unless we have to go somewhere. And it’ll cut back on laundry for you!

  4. Great list! We recently moved, and took the most important stuff with us, leaving a TON of other stuff at the old house while we prepare to sell it. Guess what? We don’t miss it! Now the quandary – do I toss it, give it away, or what? I definitely notice the freedom from not having a bunch of stuff – we moved into my mother-in-law’s house when she passed away, and 20 years of our stuff on top of mom’s stuff and former tenant’s stuff… well, you get the picture.

  5. I love all of this! I also have started buying less not worrying about material items and making more memories with my little family. Definitely need to de litter my house some more so love the 30 day challenge idea.

  6. What a great challenge. Being minimalist isn’t about saving money, It is much more about: your time, your lifestyles, your habits, and so more. I try out this challenge!

  7. I try to be more minimalist and get rid of all the things that I don’t use and are just gathering dust. I like a tidy home, decluttered and easy to clean.
